  • Piercings require time to heal, and unfortunately, there's no way to expedite this natural process. While some people may claim their piercing healed faster than the typical timeframes, this is often misleading. The exterior of a piercing may seem healed once the soreness, redness, swelling, and crusting have subsided, but the piercing actually heals from the outside in. This means the deepest part of the piercing, located in the inner tissue or cartilage, continues to heal even after the outer layers have closed.

Younger individuals often have a more robust immune system, which can support faster healing compared to older individuals. However, regardless of age, the body still needs the full duration to form a complete fistula (the channel of the piercing) and achieve full healing. For accurate healing times, please refer to the guidelines provided below.

Emily performs earlobe piercings for babies 3-8months old and children aged 5 and older. Maria does only 10 years and older.

Emily’s age limit for baby earlobe piercings is 3-8 months. Babies under 3 months cannot be pierced due to insurance requirements. We cap the age at 8 months because this is when babies begin discovering their ears, grabbing at earrings, and crawling more frequently, which increases the risk of infection if their hands aren’t clean.

We do not offer piercings for children under the age of 5. While we previously pierced ages 3-4, we found that many children struggled emotionally with the process, often hesitating or refusing to proceed with the second piercing after experiencing the first. By age 5, most children are capable of:

    • Consenting: They can understand and express their willingness to get pierced, making the experience more positive and respectful of their autonomy.

    • Enduring the Process: They generally have the courage to sit still while getting both ears pierced individually, minimizing movement and discomfort.

    • Following Aftercare Instructions: They are better able to understand the importance of not touching their piercings, being cautious with their hair and clothing to avoid snags, and allowing for cleaning without fuss.

    • Participating in Care: They can help with their own aftercare, contributing to a smoother healing process and fostering a sense of independence.

For minor piercings, the parent or guardian must be present with their ID, and the minor must bring a physical original or certified copy of their birth certificate. The parent or guardian must be listed on it, if not guardianship paperwork will need to be provided. Parent must approve the placement and remain for the entire procedure due to liability reasons.

    • Below-the-Belt Piercings: We do not perform genital piercings (other than nipples) as we are not as trained in this area as we'd like to be. However, we do carry some large gauge genital jewelry for purchase, can custom order specific pieces, and are happy to assist with installing or removing jewelry. Please call or text us ahead of time to see what jewelry you need.

    • Horizontal Tongue Piercings (Snake Eyes): We do not perform horizontal tongue piercings because of the high risk of migration, damage to teeth and gums, potential speech impediments, and the complications associated with piercing through both tongue muscles.

    • Cheek Piercings: We do not offer cheek piercings as this area contains the parotid duct, which is critical for saliva production. Piercing this area can lead to serious complications, including leakage and medical issues that might require cauterization.

  • We do not permit photos or videos in the piercing room during a piercing procedure. However, you are welcome to take before and after photos. Photos or videos of the piercer and client are allowed only with mutual consent from both parties.

If friends or family are taking photos or videos without the consent of the piercer, they will be asked to turn off their devices or leave the room.

Please note that no photos are allowed in the studio for genital piercings at any time. This is a legal requirement, and violating it is a serious offense.

  • We strive to create a supportive and relaxing environment for all our clients. To maintain a calm and unobstructed atmosphere, we may ask individuals or groups to leave if they disrupt the studio's ambiance. We limit the number of additional support people in the piercing room to a maximum of two with the client receiving the piercing—no extra guests are allowed. If friends or family are taking photos or videos without the consent of the piercer, they will be asked to turn off their devices or leave the room. Nor should they be standing in the walkway or interfering with the piercer’s workspace. For minors not receiving a service, an additional adult must be present to supervise them if the parent or guardian is getting pierced. This is important because the studio contains health hazards such as soiled biohazard waste and contaminated needle sharps containers, which could pose risks.

  • For nostrils and most cartilage ear piercings, we do not use rings initially. We recommend waiting at least 6 months, or until the piercing is more fully healed, before considering a ring.

Rings tend to have more movement and often feature seams or hinges that can shift in and out of the piercing. This movement can cause irritation and make the piercing channel more prone to bumps or what some may perceive as keloids. Additionally, if we were to pierce with a ring from the start, it would need to be a thick gauge, captive bead ring with a larger diameter to accommodate initial swelling, which can make it appear bulky.

Most clients prefer thinner, snugger seamless rings, which are not ideal for new piercings due to potential complications. Therefore, we choose not to offer rings for initial piercings, with exceptions for first earlobes, daiths, and septums. However, we are more than happy to install a ring for nostrils and most cartilage piercings after they have fully healed, typically around 6 months post-piercing.

  • Changing your piercing before it’s fully healed can lead to several complications:

    1. Extra Trauma: Removing and replacing jewelry can cause additional trauma to the piercing site. The process of taking out the existing jewelry and inserting new jewelry especially if you don't know what you're doing can disrupt the healing tissue, leading to increased irritation and prolonged healing.

    2. Risk of Infection: The new jewelry might not be sterile as the initial jewelry used by the piercer was. Introducing non-sterile jewelry increases the risk of introducing bacteria, which can lead to infections.

    3. Inappropriate Jewelry: New jewelry might not be the correct gauge, length, diameter, or material for your piercing. If the jewelry isn’t made from high-quality materials or doesn’t fit properly, it can cause additional irritation, bumps, and swelling.

    4. Healing Issues: Changing jewelry prematurely often results in extra healing issues, such as bumps, swelling, and prolonged discomfort. This can extend the healing time and complicate the overall healing process.

To ensure optimal healing and reduce the risk of complications, it’s best to wait until your piercing is fully healed before changing the jewelry. Always consult with your piercer if you have any concerns or need advice on the proper timing for changing your jewelry.

  • We exclusively use sterilized beveled needles and high-quality, sterile titanium jewelry for all piercings.

While the needle might seem intimidating, it actually provides a smoother, quicker, and more effective piercing experience, leading to better healing. Think of it this way: if you were undergoing surgery, would you prefer the surgeon use a sharp scalpel or a blunt butter knife? The scalpel would make the incision more precise, quicker, and promote better healing compared to the blunt instrument. Similarly, in body piercing, the hollow beveled needle acts like the scalpel—creating a clean, precise slit and stretching the tissue to the right size for the jewelry.

Piercing guns, in contrast, are highly discouraged for several reasons:

    • Excessive Trauma: Piercing guns force a blunt, pointed earring through the lobe, causing significant tissue damage and leading to scar tissue formation and increased sensitivity.

    • Inadequate Sizing: The posts used in piercing guns are fixed in length and do not accommodate swelling, which can result in the jewelry embedding into the tissue and may require a hospital visit and lots of scarring.

    • Discomfort: The butterfly-clasp backings on these earrings are uncomfortable and can be especially bothersome while sleeping.

    • Hygiene Issues: Piercing guns are typically made of plastic and are typically just wiped with alcohol between clients in the mall setting, which means they cannot be properly sterilized in an autoclave, increasing the risk of infection.

    • Potential for Injury: Guns can become stuck or locked onto the tissue, leading to a painful and traumatic experience.

    • Poor Aftercare: Establishments using piercing guns often provide inadequate aftercare advice, making the entire experience a significant waste of time and money.

    • Inexperienced Operators: Often, those who operate piercing guns are either inexperienced young people who have had only a brief tutorial or nurses who may claim not to use piercing guns while actually doing so. These individuals typically do not specialize in body piercing and lack the extensive training required for a safe and precise piercing experience. Our team, on the other hand, has devoted years to mastering this craft, understanding that body piercing involves more than just "grab the ear, stab, and insert jewelry." Our commitment to the art and science of piercing ensures a professional, skilled approach that prioritizes your safety and satisfaction.

  • We do not use jewelry from outside sources for new piercings, including jewelry purchased from Red Art that has left our studio. This policy helps us ensure the highest quality and cleanliness of the jewelry used for new piercings. However, we can insert jewelry into healed piercings if it meets our standards of being high-quality, implant-grade, and either threadless or internally threaded.

  • We use implant-grade titanium, niobium, or solid 14kt and 18kt yellow, rose, or white gold for our piercings. Depending on the piercing, we may use flat back labret posts, barbells, circulars, or rings. Our body jewelry is sourced from top-tier companies, ensuring luxury and exceptional quality:

  • It's crucial to avoid getting piercings while on Accutane (isotretinoin) and to wait at least one year after completing the medication before considering new piercings.

    Here’s why:

Accutane works by reducing oil production in the skin, which can lead to dryness and thinning of the skin. Due to the thinning and dryness caused by Accutane, your skin may not heal as effectively. Piercings require a healthy, well-hydrated healing environment to close properly. The altered skin condition can increase the risk of complications such as prolonged healing times, irritation, and infections.

Accutane can also affect collagen production, which is essential for proper wound healing. This may lead to an increased risk of scarring or the formation of keloids (raised scars) around the piercing site.

Accutane can have lingering effects on your skin even after you stop taking the medication. Waiting at least one year ensures that your skin has had sufficient time to return to its normal state, thereby reducing the risk of complications and ensuring a better healing outcome for your piercings.

  • We cannot pierce clients who are pregnant due to potential health risks for both the mother and the unborn child. Here are some key reasons why:

    1. Infection Risk: During pregnancy, the immune system is compromised, making the body more susceptible to infections. Getting a piercing involves breaking the skin, which could lead to complications.

    2. Healing Challenges: Pregnancy hormones can affect skin elasticity, sensitivity, and oil production, making it harder for a piercing to heal properly. This can result in increased irritation, a higher likelihood of body rejection, and the development of bumps around the piercing.

    3. Increased Discomfort: Pregnancy often brings heightened sensitivity and discomfort, which can make the piercing process more painful and stressful.

For these reasons, we prioritize the health and safety of our clients and their babies by not performing piercings on pregnant individuals.

We are comfortable piercing mothers who are breastfeeding, as current research indicates that infections cannot be transmitted through breast milk and does not pose a direct risk to the baby. We have pierced several breastfeeding mothers, including Emily, the owner, and have not observed any additional risk.

However, we recommend that you wait at least 6 weeks postpartum before getting a piercing. This allows your body to focus on healing from childbirth and ensures that it is not dividing its resources between healing a piercing and recovering from the physical demands of giving birth.

  • Before performing any piercing, we will consult with you about your unique anatomy.

If your anatomy suggests that a particular piercing may not be suitable, we will explain our reasons and may recommend alternative options.

We aim to suggest similar or alternative piercings that are more likely to heal well. This consideration is especially common for navels, industrials, snugs, septums, surface piercings, and genital piercings.

  • Since our jewelry collection changes frequently with new arrivals each month, we don’t maintain an online catalog of our current stock. However, we will soon be adding our jewelry to our website, allowing clients to view and reserve specific pieces along with seeing pricing before their appointment.

We prefer appointments for viewing jewelry to make sure we have enough time to go over your options and get your sizing, but welcome walk-ins during piercing hours if we have the availability. Our jewelry is displayed in the piercing room, so viewing it isn’t possible while piercers are assisting other clients. A piercer must be present for jewelry sales to ensure you get the correct size, gauge, and type.

  • Nipple piercings can be scheduled with us here.

For below-the-belt genital piercings, we are not trained to perform these procedures and do not offer them. However, we do stock some large gauge jewelry for genital piercings, can custom order jewelry for you, and help assist with the installation and removal of jewelry. Contact us directly before booking a jewelry change appointment to confirm we have what you need.

  • If you have any of the following health conditions, we require you to consult with your doctor before getting a piercing or tattoo. You may also need to provide a signed doctor’s note confirming that you’re cleared for the tattoo or piercing procedure:

    • Hemophilia

    • Epilepsy

    • Cancer

    • Taking Blood Thinners

    • Seizures

    • Recent Surgery

    • Fainting

    • Skin Lesions or Dermatitis

    • Narcolepsy

    • Diabetes

    • Any other condition that affects your immune system or impairs your body’s ability to fight infection

Your safety and well-being are our top priorities.

  • We do not use or recommend numbing products before a piercing. The actual piercing procedure is very quick, taking only about 3 seconds. Numbing agents can affect the tissue, causing the piercing placement to shift or appear crooked as the numbing wears off. Additionally, these products often numb only the outer skin, not the inner tissue, which means you might still feel sensations. They can also pose a risk of allergic reactions. While piercings may involve some discomfort, we strive to make the process as swift and smooth as possible for you.

  • For pregnant women with a navel piercing, it's generally best to remove the jewelry. If you've had the piercing for a few years, it's unlikely to close completely. After your baby is born, you can visit us and we will use a special tool called a taper to help reopen the piercing and insert jewelry.

Keeping the piercing in during pregnancy, even if it’s a plastic one, is not recommended. As your skin stretches to accommodate your growing belly, the piercing can become problematic. It’s possible for the jewelry to cause tears, reject, or result in extra stretched skin due to the increased strain on the delicate area. Removing the jewelry can help avoid these issues and ensure better healing post-pregnancy.

Once your baby arrives, we’d be happy to assist you with reopening or redoing the piercing and getting you back to your desired jewelry.

  • Several factors can contribute to piercings migrating or rejecting, including:

    • Improper Piercing Technique: If the piercing was done at the wrong angle or with unsuitable jewelry, it can affect healing.

    • Incorrect Jewelry Size or Style: Using jewelry that is too long or the wrong style for your piercing can cause issues.

    • Failure to Downsize: Leaving a longer barbell or post in after swelling has gone down can lead to migration. Switching to a shorter size once the swelling subsides is important.

    • External Pressure: Wearing tight clothing, such as bras or pants that put pressure on the piercing, can also cause problems.

If you’re experiencing issues with migration or rejection, it’s best to remove the jewelry, allow the area to heal, and then consider getting the piercing redone. If your piercing was done at our studio, please contact us for support and guidance on the next steps.

  • In accordance with health regulations and hygiene standards, we are unable to accept returns or offer exchanges on jewelry. We understand that buying jewelry as a gift can be challenging since it’s not always a one-size-fits-all. To ensure the recipient receives jewelry that fits properly, we offer gift certificates. Alternatively, the recipient can schedule an appointment with us to choose their jewelry. Please note that a piercer must be present for all jewelry purchases at Red Art.

  • It is best to remove the jewelry from your nipple piercings while breastfeeding. Focus on feeding your baby without any potential hazards from the jewelry. Once your breastfeeding period is over, you can return to us to have the piercing hole reopened with a taper or to redo the piercing entirely.

If you’ve had your nipple piercings for over 5 years, the likelihood of them closing up completely is slim. However, if they’ve been in place for less than 5 years, they may close up quickly without jewelry and could require redoing.

Never breastfeed with jewelry in your nipples, as there’s a risk of the baby accidentally ingesting a ball or barbell if it becomes dislodged, which could be dangerous, especially if it has a threadless pin. Be prepared for some milk to leak through the healed piercing holes.

  • We accept various payment methods, including Debit, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, Apple Pay, and cash. Please note that we charge a 3% card processing fee, so if you'd prefer to avoid this extra cost, we recommend bringing cash.

Additionally, we now offer Afterpay for a 6% convenience fee, allowing you to manage your payments in installments.
