Troubleshooting Your Healing Piercing

My Piercing Has Bumps:

Irritation bumps are one of the most common piercing concerns and are usually caused by:

  • Sleeping on the piercing
  • Excess moisture or wet hair
  • Pressure or snagging
  • Jewelry that needs downsizing or upsizing
  • Touching or playing with the jewelry
  • Incorrect jewelry style or angle

Most irritation bumps are not infections and can improve once the source of irritation is removed. Please contact us so we can help!

My Piercing Is Red, Sore, or Swollen:

Some redness, tenderness, and swelling can be completely normal, especially:

  • During the first few weeks
  • After accidentally bumping or snagging the piercing
  • Following a jewelry change or downsize

Although if you feel your jewelry is too short and your body’s swelling is causing it to embed in your skin, please contact us ASAP so we can upsize your jewelry and inspect it for any signs of infection.

I Think My Piercing Is Infected:

Signs that may indicate an infection include:

  • Bright red skin
  • Excessive swelling and intense pain that is worsening
  • Yellow or green discharge or leaking fluid
  • Throbbing and heat radiating from the area
  • Fever or feeling unwell

If you suspect an infection, please contact us ASAP so we can inspect it and refer you to a medical professional. There are protocols to infected piercings to eliminate the risk of an abscess forming so please contact us first before removing jewelry.

  • 🧼 CLEAN

    • Spray the piercing holes directly with sterile saline 2x daily, morning & night
    • The purpose of saline is to rinse away bacteria that lands on the wound, less is more with aftercare
  • 💨 DRY

    • Pat dry front/back of the piercings with clean gauze, paper towel, or toilet paper (a brand new roll) after saline and when it gets wet (showering, face washing, etc)
    • For inner ear cartilage piercings, blow dry after patting dry on a cool setting to ensure all moisture is gone
    • Avoid leaving excess moisture or bumps can occur
    • No wet hair on the piercings - must blow dry it or pin it up away
  • 🚿 CRUSTIES

    • Clean crusties after showering 1-2x a week, only if needed
    • Let the water run on the piercing to soften the crusties
    • Get out and gently use a wet saline cotton swab to wipe them away front/back
    • Don’t pick at the crusties with your fingers
  • 🚫 AVOID

    • Submerging under water in lakes, oceans, baths or hot tubs before its 2 months into healing
    • Twisting or turning jewelry
    • Changing or removing jewelry before it's fully healed
    • Alcohol, peroxide, a&d, ointments, soap
    • Homemade salt soaks or google/tiktok ‘bump’ remedies
    • Makeup, body/hair/face products, and loofahs on the piercing
    • Sleeping directly on your piercing
    • Snagging on towels, blankets, clothing, or hair
  • 👄 ORAL PIERCINGS

    • Brush with a non-whitening toothpaste
    • Use alcohol-free mouthwash 2x daily, morning and night
    • Avoid sticky and spicy foods for the first few weeks
    • Rinse with water after eating or smoking
    • Sleep elevated and put ice in mouth to reduce swelling
    • Avoid any oral sexual activities for 2 months due to risk of infection
    • Must downsize around 2-3 weeks into healing to lower risk of teeth and gum damage
  • DOWNSIZING

    • We put in longer jewelry to prevent embedding when the body swells, piercings need a shorter post in 4–6 weeks once that swelling goes down
    • Downsizing helps prevent:
      • Irritation bumps
      • Migration
      • Snagging
